Sponges, corals & the world

30 March 2017 to 31 March 2017

SPONGE, CORALS AND THE WORLD is an international symposium on marine sciences, blue business and society.

The (free) symposium is a joint initiative of three EC-funded projects: BluePharmTrain, Atlas and SponGES. We would like to bring together major scientific, industrial and societal stakeholders in blue biotechnology. Because effective transfer of novel discoveries in marine biotechnology can greatly improve Europe’s capacity, to address the needs of the society of the future and to generate new commercial opportunities.

An interactive industry exhibition, plenary lectures, poster sessions, and scientific talks, as well as keynote lectures are expected, to build new opportunities in a cross-sectorial knowledge from research, societal partners and industry.

We are looking forward to meet you in the beautiful Blanes, Spain.

European Maritime Day 2017

18 May 2017 to 19 May 2017

Borough of Poole is delighted to announce their bid to host European Maritime Day has been successful.

The Council of the European Commission announced the list of host cities for 2015 – 2019 on 1 July and Poole will host the event in May 2017.

This internationally important maritime event is held annually on 20 May to showcase the importance of the sea in our everyday lives – enabling transportation of food and vital supplies, providing jobs and a thriving economy and enhancing leisure and relaxation opportunities.

The conference brings together key stakeholders involved in the maritime sector from shipbuilding to offshore energy, the coastal environment and tourism to address the major challenges they face.  As part of Poole’s bid, four key subject areas were proposed for the conference theme – renewable energy; spatial planning and integrated coastal zone management; safety and security and protecting coastal ecosystems.  The theme will be selected nearer the time as topical interests can fluctuate.

6th congress of the international society for applied phycology

18 June 2017 to 23 June 2017

After Kunming-China in 2005, Galway - Ireland in 2008, Halifax–Canada in 2011 and Sydney-Australia in 2014,  the committee presiding the International Society of Applied Phycology (http://www.appliedphycologysoc.org/) decided to trust a scientific team of western France to organize the 6th congress of the society in Nantes at La Cité Nantes Events Center from June 18th to 23rd 2017. Indeed, with over 300 people working in its universities and research centers and more than 100 businesses, Western France is a European hotspot for the transfer and industrial development of marine biotechnology (Marine Biotech in Western France).

Previous ISAP Congresses have seen the role of applied algal biotechnology and their potential developed in a commercial, remedial or regulatory context. In 2014, the theme of ISAP was chosen to reflect on the actual successes of algae applications as they already represent a sustainable and relevant field of biotechnology.

In 2017 the scope of the 6th edition of ISAP congress is to appreciate the huge phycological biodiversity and the diversity of its biotechnological applications through the prism of a new and promising industrial sector in full development. The Congress will include speakers and posters presentations, exhibitors and for the first time a BtoB session to meet the right partners.

World Seafood Congress 2017

10 September 2017 to 13 September 2017

The focus of the WSC 2017 is on the growth in the Blue-Bioeconomy, practical approach and cutting edge research for market innovation, food safety and food integrity.

Three main pillars of the WSC 2017 are:

Seafood Innovation: Innovation stories and investment opportunities

Food safety in the context of seafood innovation and international trade

Food integrity: How to counteract food fraud in the age of increased e-commerce, tourism and demands of value chain transparency

The World Seafood Congress brings together a global audience of seafood processors and importers, academia, public and private organisations, fish inspectors and government and other diverse disciplines to provide them opportunities to:

Exchange information, ideas and methodologies for fish, seafood and associated products inspection, quality management and fish/seafood processing technology;

Foster interaction, understanding and professional collaboration among individuals, organizations and governments for the purpose of facilitating the global export and import of fish, seafood and associated products and their consumption;

Contribute to discussions and analysis of current fish/seafood inspection and control systems, regulatory regimes and fish/seafood processing infrastructure and suggest ways and means to improve fish, seafood and associated product quality and safety inspection and mitigate risk of fish/seafood origin consumer illness;

Disseminate knowledge about fish, seafood and associated products inspection and methodologies employed;
encourage development of global fish, seafood and associated products, product standards and new fish/seafood inspection systems, methodologies and technologies;

Promote advancement of the state-of-the-art in research and education on fish/seafood inspection and control systems and risk analysis and their integration into everyday application;

Provide services to its members to assist them in developing their careers as fish/seafood inspectors; and

Provide fish, seafood and associated product inspection, quality management and fish/seafood processing technology consultative, inspection and audit services to individuals and organizations.

The first World Seafood Congress (WSC) was held in Halifax in 1969. The second congress was held 27 years later in Washington where it was concluded that frequent meetings would be useful to share experience and practices. Since 1996 the World Seafood Congress (WSC) has been held every 2nd year all around the world.

The WSC was initiated by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Congress is owned by The International Association of Food Inspectors (IAFI). Each conference is organised by a selected institute in the host country, WSC 2017 is organised by Matís ltd. - Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D.

Better Off Blue – Creating synergies for a bio-based society

27 September 2017 to 28 September 2017

The second large-scale SUBMARINER conference will take place in Berlin, Germany on 27–28 September 2017. It aims to identify the most promising actions for real progress towards a blue bioeconomy and bio-based society in the Baltic Sea Region. To this end, it will bring together and create synergies between the work of policy makers and representatives of businesses and research institutions. Along a range of cross-cutting topics, the event will showcase advances made in the current Submariner Network projects and other initiatives from all parts of the Baltic Sea Region.

The plenary sessions will feature insights from inspirational keynote speakers and expert panelists. An excellent matchmaking opportunity, the conference will provide ample time for structured and informal b2b networking. Its parallel workshops will include topics such as the valorisation of ecosystem services, marine trends on the food market, biobased materials & chemicals and many more. Real-world cases from each of these areas will serve as a springboard for discussion. As the Submariner Network is an umbrella flagship for innovation, our aim is to arrive at a conference declaration positioning the Network, its stakeholders and actions with a view to the European Commission’s implementation strategy for blue growth in the Baltic Sea Region.

The SUBMARINER Network is organising the conference in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, Agriculture, the Environment and Rural Areas of Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) and the project Baltic Blue Growth. The event will take place in the representation of Schleswig-Holstein to the Federal Government in Berlin, Germany on 27 and 28 September 2017.
