The focus of the WSC 2017 is on the growth in the Blue-Bioeconomy, practical approach and cutting edge research for market innovation, food safety and food integrity.

​Three main pillars of the WSC 2017 are:

Seafood Innovation: Innovation stories and investment opportunities

Food safety in the context of seafood innovation and international trade

Food integrity: How to counteract food fraud in the age of increased e-commerce, tourism and demands of value chain transparency

​The World Seafood Congress brings together a global audience of seafood processors and importers, academia, public and private organisations, fish inspectors and government and other diverse disciplines to provide them opportunities to:

​Exchange information, ideas and methodologies for fish, seafood and associated products inspection, quality management and fish/seafood processing technology;

Foster interaction, understanding and professional collaboration among individuals, organizations and governments for the purpose of facilitating the global export and import of fish, seafood and associated products and their consumption;

Contribute to discussions and analysis of current fish/seafood inspection and control systems, regulatory regimes and fish/seafood processing infrastructure and suggest ways and means to improve fish, seafood and associated product quality and safety inspection and mitigate risk of fish/seafood origin consumer illness;

Disseminate knowledge about fish, seafood and associated products inspection and methodologies employed;
encourage development of global fish, seafood and associated products, product standards and new fish/seafood inspection systems, methodologies and technologies;

Promote advancement of the state-of-the-art in research and education on fish/seafood inspection and control systems and risk analysis and their integration into everyday application;

Provide services to its members to assist them in developing their careers as fish/seafood inspectors; and

Provide fish, seafood and associated product inspection, quality management and fish/seafood processing technology consultative, inspection and audit services to individuals and organizations.

The first World Seafood Congress (WSC) was held in Halifax in 1969. The second congress was held 27 years later in Washington where it was concluded that frequent meetings would be useful to share experience and practices. Since 1996 the World Seafood Congress (WSC) has been held every 2nd year all around the world.

The WSC was initiated by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The Congress is owned by The International Association of Food Inspectors (IAFI). Each conference is organised by a selected institute in the host country, WSC 2017 is organised by Matís ltd. - Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D.
